NUSKULL / Hungary ( translated from hungarian ) Mastabah's story is a simple one, Thorn (Ex-Azarath, Dark Legion, Bisclaveret) brought it to life in 2004, then Jack Denka (Dark Legion) and Martin Kalinka (Dark Legion) and Nicholas joined and they recorded their first promo in november that same year. They needed a frontman who would push the polish deathband's present forward, so came Artur �Chudy" Chudewniak (ex-Trauma) as singer into the picture, and the slaying began� The sound's great, the design is really nice too, nowhere trace of guts and blood, instead this band's music from gdansk is the punishment itself, and filled with loathing. I haven't heard such technical music of high standard in a long time, it contains deathly speed, brutal rhythms, chaotic downfalls, tight fronts, and solos of high standard again. Their music is somewhere between old Sinister and Fleshgore, a little Morbid Angel at the side, and some of their solutions remind me of the norvegian death-thrash band, Cadaver (the Necrosis album). This punctuality and carnage is stunning, this is self-discipline by these 5 polish guys. The opening We Are is Cadaver-like, with tight heavy riffs and thrashing drums, with amazing solos that bring a change into the grindcore-like production. But don't catch Your breath, it continues with Slave Of Evil, and extemely speeding song with black metal-ish beeping, the changing vocals crown the decapitated king, who's bleeding of thousand wounds� Heaven in Flames starts slowly, only to leave deep mark sin the end, I get caught up in feelings of Necrosis, but I consider this to the stunningly punctual and brutal teamwork. The corpses breathe together, it's alive, though it's dead for long� if I wanted to compare it to other bands, I'd say it sounds like Dissenter, Gorgasm (it's not so technincal yet), polish Hate here and there (cos of the changes and punctuality), maybe Mumakil (more complex than them), Rotten Sound (extremity), The County Medical Examiners and Voice Of Hate. Maybe what fits more as resemblance is Behemoth's Satanica album, which is a masterpiece by them. So the ones that know Behemoth know what to expect! In my opinion the polish are really fucked in the head, the most brutal of europe, with death, grind and gore bands, You only twinkle, haha. Back to the ep, Black Veil's pouring down something You won't digest soon. Arterial plays with Morbid Angel-like solos, the riffs are grind-based, just like the rhythm. Blasphemer's begins like some Incubus stuff, which then switches to a solo, midtempo, riffs, grind rhythms and gore-like vocals tear the headbanging apart. The closing Master Of Himself is another fantastic song, tearing, ripping, int he background there is a melody, but gets swept away by the bloody and dense brutality.. What else could I say, it's a fucking strong stuff, I'm awaiting the next album, though it's so hard to digest these 21 minutes, bushy, quintessential knowledge and aggression. The ones who know me know how fanatic I am about this genre, You can belive me, these guys are not fucking around too much, though they don't reach the highs of Morbid Angel (I guess they didn't intend to, didn't even go that direction), they easily defeat Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Immolation and the polish Vader. 10/10 (definitely!) ETERNAL TERROR / Norway Karakter: 5/6 Polsk death metal har vi vært innom mange ganger her i terrorland, og denne gangen er det et ferskt band som kaller seg Mastabah. Mastabah ble startet opp i 2004 av tidligere Azarath og Damnation gitarist Thorn og Jack, også aktiv som trommis i Dark Legion. De fikk raskt med seg Martin (Dark Legion) på bass og Nicholas på gitar og nå i år fikk de med seg Trauma vokalisten Chudy for å komplettere line upen. En demo fra 2004 er alt de har på samvittigheten fra før av, men nå er de på markedet med sin debut kalt "Purity". Her handler det om brutal death metal slik bare polakker kan lage den. Brutalt, teknisk og til dels kjapp god death metal med en vokalist som er oppvokst i kullgruvene et eller annet sted i det etter hvert så strenge landet Polen musikalsk. Det er flust av tøffe riff og riffpartier, men det er i hovedsak vokalen og de noe dominerende trommene som herjer mest på denne skiva. Gitarene er tonet ned og gjør at de til tider dessverre blir litt for utydelige. Noe mer gitarlyd og dette kunne blitt en gullgruve. Det må nevnes at bandet har en meget dyktig trommis i Gore, det er sjelden man hører såpass bra tromming fra unge og ukjente band. Dessverre består denne miniskiva av kun 7 låter på totalt xx minutter. Jeg skulle ønsket meg mer, mye mer, for dette smaker det fugl av. Jeg håper de fortsetter med dette prosjektet og klarer å komme opp med en fullengder i løpet av ikke så alt for lang tid. METAL.DE / Germany Punkte: 7/10 Hossa, gleich mit unmenschlichem Hyperspeed bläst einem "Purity" entgegen und zerlegt erstmal alles in Schutt und Asche bevor man sich dem folgenden kurzweiligen, von leicht melodischen Gitarren durchzogenen Doublebass-Geballer hingeben kann. Danach geht das Gerappel unverzüglich weiter und es gibt wieder gnadenlosen Highspeed, der einem den Schmalz aus den Ohren bolzt. Aus Polen stammen MASTABAH und frönen ausgiebig dem sehr schnellen und brutalen Death Metal. Der Mikrogrunzer kotzt sich das Herz aus dem leib und die Instrumentalfraktion verausgabt sich hier völlig, wobei ich ganz besonders den Schlagwerker hervorheben möchte. Zunächst dachte ich an einen Drumcomputer, musste dann aber den Angaben auf der Bandwebsite glauben, die besagt, es mit einem Drummer aus Fleisch und Blut zu tun zu haben; unglaublich! Das muss man wenigstens einmal gehört haben, da werden selbst BRODEQUIN-Fanatiker blass. Wirklich kaum fassbar. Abwechslung wird natürlich nicht allzu groß geschrieben, aber wenn eine Band ihre Sache gut macht, braucht man auch nicht allzu abwechslungsreich sein. MASTABAH haben zwar nicht gerade den ersten Preis in Sachen verdient, aber trotzdem kann man diese EP nahtlos durchziehen, wenn man auf derart extreme Musik steht. Selbst eine viertel Stunde nach dem letzten Ton dieser CD muss ich noch mit dem Kopf schütteln. Absoluter Wahnsinn, wie schnell Drummer Jack hier die Felle drischt. Wie oft er wohl neue aufspannen muss? Achtung: Nichts für Weichkekse!!! BLACKFUEL / Netherlands rate 80 Het death metallende Mastabah is een nog jonge band uit Polen, die in 2004 is voortgekomen uit Dark Legion, de death metalband die enige jaren daarvoor het loodje had gelegd. Drie jaar na de wereld te hebben bestookt met een titelloze demo achtte Mastabah de tijd nu rijp voor een eerste release. Een geslaagd visitekaartje, want met de zeven bruut hakkende nummers die �Purity� rijk is, weten de Polen een heel behoorlijke indruk te maken. Het is natuurlijk heel makkelijk om paralellen te trekken met dé Poolse death metalband Vader, maar overeenkomsten zijn er. Vooral met Vaders �De Profundis� (1995). Net als op die plaat is het haasten geblazen op �Purity� en wordt er de volle rit op topsnelheid doorgestampt. Niet in de laatste plaats door drummonster Jack die werkelijk beestachtig snel en strak tekeer gaat. Vanaf heden ben je voor woeste HSL-death metal bij Mastabah dus aan het goede adres.
